Biblical worship, like our lives, is also consumed with destination and the final destination of all Biblical worship is vertical. I’m not saying that worship cannot or should not have horizontal aspects.
Every week when we gather to lead worship we stand as teachers in a classroom of congregants. The songs and materials we use in corporate worship teach others how to think about God. A.W. Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
In worship ministry, specifically at larger churches, it has become normalized for the Green Room to become a place of retreat, a refuge for those carrying out the “up-front” ministry on stage. From this a culture of inaccessibility for the “performers” in the church has become increasingly common.
When I was learning to teach worship songwriting, I had a great mentor who emphasized teaching steady principles over stylistic patterns noting that styles will come and go, but principles are the enduring truths that apply to all trends.
One of the Hebrew names for God is “El Roi” which means “the God who sees”. As I’ve lived through pain, struggle, injustice and misunderstanding, this aspect of God’s great character has been a wellspring of comfort.
It seems like much of the worship landscape today is a collection of visible platforms for artistry and talent. God uses talented people and Scripture instructs us to worship God with skill (Psalm 33:3). But it’s concerning to see how our current culture feeds and rewards visibility, proliferating the pride that’s inherent in all of us.
There’s a real value to staying in your lane and it’s a Biblical principle found in an unlikely place.
